I’m super psyched to introduce two new additions to our blogging team, Terri Griffith and Abigail Satinsky. For podcast fans, Terri is already a known factor – she and Joanna Torpor Mackenzie are BAS’ literary correspondents, and did those fabulous book review segments which were often my favorite parts of the podcast. Terri will now be blogging here about books, art, and culture twice a month on Fridays (check out her first post on James Bidgood today), and Abigail will be checking in with us each month with notes and reports on the social practice scene in Chicago and beyond. A little background info: Terri’s writing has appeared in publications like Bloom, Suspect Thoughts, and Bust, as well as in the anthologies Without a Net: The Female Experience of Growing Up Working Class and Art from Art: An Anthology of Fiction Inspired by Art. She’s also the co-editor (with Janet Koplos and Kathryn Born) of the forthcoming anthology The Legacy of The New Art Examiner: Thirty Years of Independent Arts Journalism. And she just published her debut novel, titled So Much Better (it’s available from Green Lantern Press). Abigail is a founding member of InCUBATE, a research group dedicated to exploring new approaches to arts administration and arts funding (Bad at Sports interviewed InCUBATE on Episode 195 of the podcast). Abigail has also written for Proximity Magazine, AREA Chicago, The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, The Artist-Run Chicago Digest and other places, and currently works as the Director of Programs at threewalls in Chicago.

Terri and Abigail’s interest in literature and art, and social practice issues, respectively, help round out the content that current bloggers Nicholas O’Brien and Caroline Picard have been providing us for a number of months now. Nicholas is a new media artist and curator specializing in net art – he’s been bringing us fantastic interviews with internet practioners that, in their form, brilliantly reflect the interview’s subject matter itself (check out Nicholas’ interview with “Kool Aid Man” Jon Rafman –conducted inside Second Life — to see what I mean). Within the next few weeks Nicholas will debut a brand new, as-yet-untitled column for Bad at Sports dedicated to analyzing and exploring current issues in net art. It’s gonna rock, people. Caroline Picard, an artist, writer, arts administrator and publisher (best known as the main force behind Green Lantern Press) will now be contributing on a weekly basis each Wednesday starting in March. Caroline’s work is slow blogging at its best – and lucky for us, she’ll continue to post in-depth, wonderfully nuanced interviews with artists working in and outside of Chicago alongside essays musing on art, culture, and lived experience. And of course, every Thursday Stephanie Burke continues to feature her Top 5 Weekend Picks of the best exhibitions opening in Chicago over the weekend (it’s an especially great resource for checking out what’s happening at smaller apartment galleries and alternative spaces) so you can plan your gallery crawl accordingly.

And oh yes, there is even more: to keep things fresh, we’re also stirring a series of guest bloggers into this mix. Next week, Julia V. Hendrickson, an artist, writer, and the gallery manager at Chicago’s Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery and a teaching assistant at the Marwen Foundation will guest blog, bringing us an interview with Mark Pascale, a curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings at The Art Institute, a peek into the Prints and Drawings study room at the AIC, a talk with John Corbett and Jim Dempsey about the history behind their gallery and a bunch of other fun stuff from her world. Julia is an active member of the Chicago Printers Guild, and has a solo show up right now at Anchor Graphics (Columbia College Chicago) titled FANTASTIC STANZAS, on view through March 26th. After Julia, we’ll be featuring guest blogs from Chicago curator and arts writer Thea Liberty Nichols and artist Dan Gunn, among others. So, archaic though may be to put it this way…please do stay tuned!

Also, apropros of absolutely fucking nothing, I just came across a picture of this t-shirt, which made me laugh really hard for about five different reasons. Please to enjoy:

Actor James Franco, star of Milk and Spiderman and other movies you’ve probably seen, is playing an artist right now on the soap opera General Hospital (I remember cutting school when I was a tween to come home and watch this show during its Luke n’ Laura heyday). For Franco, the guest-starring role, which is featured over 23 episodes, is a kind of experiment: an attempt to insert performance art into a long-running daytime serial. Franco writes about the experience, and its relationship to performance art, in the Wall Street Journal this week. Don’t miss this article. It’s fascinating to read the perspective that a Hollywood actor brings to the types of performances that are enacted in other cultural spheres–the art world as well as the highly stylized narratives seen on daytime television.

An excerpt from Franco’s Wall Street Journal article:

“I have been obsessed with performance art for over a decade—ever since the Mexican performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña came to visit my class at Cal Arts summer school. I finally took the plunge and experimented with the form myself when I signed on to appear on 20 episodes of “General Hospital” as the bad-boy artist “Franco, just Franco.” I disrupted the audience’s suspension of disbelief, because no matter how far I got into the character, I was going to be perceived as something that doesn’t belong to the incredibly stylized world of soap operas. Everyone watching would see an actor they recognized, a real person in a made-up world. In performance art, the outcome is uncertain—and this was no exception. My hope was for people to ask themselves if soap operas are really that far from entertainment that is considered critically legitimate. Whether they did was out of my hands.”

I love this idea! Note to self: DVR General Hospital and check out Franco’s part. I’m not in a position to judge how effectively Franco’s appearances will work as performance art, because I think only regular viewers of the daytime drama will be able to judge how well it rubs against the rest of the narrative. So, if there are any of you out there who watch General Hospital regularly please email us at mail@badatsports.com and let us know what you thought!

Watch James Franco interview Marina Abramović about performance art in the WSJ video below (and learn more about Abramović’s golden cake piece that I so harshly ragged on a few weeks ago). And thanks for tipping me off to all this, Meg!

Sorry. We were a little slow due to power outages and the mediocre AT&T.

Art Critic Greg Cook (The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix) joins Matt Nash, James Nadeau and Christian Holland of Big RED & Shiny to discuss
the 2008 AICA New England Awards.

Using the list of winners as a starting point, they discuss the state of the arts in New England and what they thought was great, mediocre and terrible. Disappointment in the new Institute of Contemporary Art is expressed; AICA is scrutinized; and conclusions are elusive.

And the magic of Mike Benedetto.

Ok, so you have listened to our BS for 127 episodes or so, so this week we introduce an exciting new program for BAS. We will from time to time invite guest curators on to put together an episode of Bad at Sports. This week, Artist, Curator, Musician, Gallerist, Radio Host and recipient of the 2007 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation grant, Philip von Zweck does a show focused on the area from whence he came, New Orleans.

Philip von Zweck grew up in Slidell Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans that was also devastated by Katrina. In January he made his first trip back since the storm and took along a recorder for Bad at Sports to find out what’s going on in New Orleans Art and what’s up with Prospect.1, the first New Orleans Biennial coming this fall. Along the way he spoke with Chris Deris, a high school friend (BFA, Atlanta College of Art; MFA, RISD) who now teaches Sculpture at Loyola University; New Orleans artist Blake Boyd; Odgen Museum of Southern Art Curator David Houston; and Cynthia Scott, an MFA student at Tulane and one of the organizers of forthcoming artist initiatives responding to Prospect.1.

Reports galore!

Duncan talks to the crew from Bridge about the impending Miami madness. Newly knighted European bureau chief Mark Staff Brandl talks lots of shows across the pond. Mike Benedetto talks Kurosawa’s Rahomom. Brian Andrews on Portland.

Wow! That’s a whole lotta show.

Thanks to Mr. Moon for helping out with the intro.

We need an audio intern. E-mail us if you have a clue, and don’t mind somewhat dull technical work. Lots of gory, oh, my friend there is lots of glory. No money.

ALSO: BAS has an APB out for Phil Berkman. If anyone out there knows Phil Berkman we are trying to get ahold of him…
